Training, onboarding, orientation, workplace learning, learning experience. There are so many different terms in the world of learning that will easily confuse anyone that doesn\u2019t live, eat, and breath training. But what difference does it make what we call it? Training is training, right? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If training is training then why are things like Learning<\/span><\/em> Journey Maps<\/span> such an integral part of good training? To take things slow, let\u2019s begin with what a journey map is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a Journey Map?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever bought a\nproduct \u2013 a good one at that \u2013 only to face extreme frustration with the packaging,\nor with the setup instructions? Sure you have. And in that moment you\ndefinitely thought to yourself that \u201cthey really should have thought this part\nthrough\u201d because it is ruining the experience for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly the point of a journey map. It notes every interaction the user will have with the product to provide a holistic view of the user experience: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does learning come in? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly like a user <\/em>Journey Map, a Learning<\/span><\/em> Journey Map<\/span> pinpoints miserable and magical moments in an employee\u2019s learning or training experience. It can be used for a one-and-done training session, or an ongoing learning program. What matters is not the length of the journey, but what happens before, during, and after the journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Learning Journey Map doesn\u2019t need to map only the learning interactions; in fact, it shouldn\u2019t<\/em>. The Learning Journey Map should note everything about the experience. If it is an in-person training session, consider the room it is held in, from ambiance to temperature. If we\u2019re talking online training, consider barriers, like multiple login sequences, that may affect the experience in any way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
